This disease have come under most common form of inflammatory finding in colon which when seen in a endoscopic view shows various pathological finding that can be mild to severe in form involving the deep tissue mucosa. Males are more prone to Segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis or SCAD as compared to the females and usually the older adults have it. INTRODUCTION In SCAD inflammation is found in sigmoid colon only and do not spread anywhere else. The most common sign of SCAD is bleeding from rectum. No infectious agent is found or suspected in etiology of this inflammatory disorder. SCAD can have several relapses and tends to limit on its own. However, in certain cases medical intervention is needed, the cases where several relapses are occurring causing severe complaints. The diverticulum is a sac like pouch protruding from the wall of the colon. Usually it causes no symptoms but there may occur certain complications like bleeding and segmental colitis with diverticulosis. SCAD is usually a non granulamatous inflammatory condition. When seen in a endoscopic view along with the certain patches of inflammatory lesions there are seen many diverticula as well in this condition. SCAD is found to be very similar to crohn's disease in many pathological views. In some rare cases even crohn's disease is found to be co-existing with Segmental colitis associated with Diverticulosis. Hence the proper diagnosis is must. CAUSES The exact cause of the disease is not known however the occurrence of diverticulosis is found first. Diverticulosis results in changes in the bacterial flors of the colon and also causes ischemic changes. These both the things lead to inflammatory changes in the sigmoid colon causing Sigmoid colitis associated with diverticulosis. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS The main feature of SCAD is rectal bleeding that can be either in the form of fresh blood or the occult/altered blood. There are certain other associated complaints with it: Diarhhea that is chronic in nature Pain in abdomen Fever Fatigue Weight loss DIAGNOSIS Signs and symptoms make your physician to suspect the inflammatory process going on in your colon. However the exact diagnosis can be confirmed only after endoscopy and biopsy which reveals certain findings like Diverticulums and several spots of inflammation in colon which in biopsy shows absence of granulomas. If granulomas are present than do suspect and rule out Crhon's disease or Ulcerative colitis. TREATMENT As per the modern medicine system the SCAD is treated and managed with the help of corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory medicines. Even the surgical resection is advised to some patients to remove the affected part of the colon. However as knowing about the long list of side effects caused by corticosteroids and after effects of surgical resection, patients are hesitant to go for it.
